When Shanann's friends and family couldn't reach her, they contacted the police. Chris initially claimed that Shanann had left him and taken the girls with her. However, after further investigation, police discovered the bodies, and Chris was arrested on August 15, 2018.
In November 2018, Chris pleaded guilty to all nine charges against him, including five counts of first-degree murder. On November 19, 2018, Chris was sentenced to five consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 48 years for the unlawful termination of a pregnancy.
